Have you ever been in a situation — in a job interview or even social situation where you had to talk about your achievements?

It’s not easy, is it? Did you ever struggle talking about your achievements? The first time Anna Vainer, Founder of #IamRemarkable, came across with this kind of situation was in 2015 when she was taking part in a women-only workshop at Google. After talking to her colleague — Anna Zapesochini about uncomfortable situation, the two wonderful women decided to do some research and initiate #IamrRemarkable movement.

What is #IamRemarkable?

#IamRemarkable is a Google initiative that empowers women and underrepresented groups to celebrate their achievements in and out of the workplace. The movement started in 2016 as a way for Google employees to learn how to self-promote their professional accomplishments, but it quickly grew as other companies started requesting this workshop.

But why is self-promotion so difficult?

  1. If you look up the word self-promotion the first definition you get is : “The action of promoting or publicizing oneself or one’s activities, especially in a forceful way.” So this has created a misconception that self-promotion means to brag.
  2. Due to social “norms” and culture differences, it is difficult for some people to self-promote or talk about their achievements, because this is seen as “showing off”.

So what is self-promotion if it’s not “bragging”?

“Self-promotion is about educating the relevant people about skills and value that you can bring to the organization” that will allow the hiring managers to make the best possible choice when recruiting you, since you can be the best fit for the job.

“Being aware of our own unique accomplishments, and learning about those of others, helps us unleash the power of diversity together as a community.”

Anna Vainer, Founder of #IamRemarkable

How can you increase your confidence around self-promotion?

Talk passionately about your skills, your talents and your past achievements to your colleagues, friends and anyone related. Think of all the things, that you’ve done that you’re really proud of. Think of your achievements, your strengths, your skills and accomplishments, and start sharing them with people around you in a way how you feel the most comfortable in. Join other people for an #IamRemarkable workshop and celebrate your achievements together.

Did you know that 82% of participants declared to feel more confident since attending the #IamRemarkable workshop?
